Star Trek 3 gets both a new writer and release date
Star Trek 3 has been announced for a July 8th 2016 release date, but its script is now set to be rewritten, producer Roberto Orci has revealed.
Orci was due to write, direct and produce the third instalment of the franchise, but left the director's chair earlier this year.
Now Orci, who was still expected to help write the new blockbuster, has revealed he is simply acting as producer.
Writing on the TrekMovie.com messageboards, Orci said of his role: "I'm producing. Nothing more or less.”
When asked who would be penning the new script, Orci responded: "I won’t lie, I don’t know yet, but the story we are talking about would be awesome, hang in there."
Last week it was revealed that Justin Lin, best known for directing four instalments of the Fast & Furious franchise, has signed up to direct the new Star Trek movie.
According to reports, Lin was the only director to be offered the role, despite the likes of Edgar Wright, Rupert Wyatt and Morten Tyldum being linked with the seat.
Shooting on the next Star Trek film is expected to commence next year, with stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and John Cho are all expected to return.
Lin will begin work on the film as soon as he has finished his role as director on the first two episodes of True Detective.
