As the UK cinemas begin to open up again, new releases are slowly beginning to hit the calendar and one of the first is Summerland.

The film stars Gemma Arterton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, with Lucas Bond, Dixie Egerickx, Siân Phillips, Penelope Wilton and Tom Courtenay in supporting roles.

Jessica Swale, who has worked with Arterton on stage, writes and directs. Summerland is her first outing in cinemas.

Arterton plays Alice Lamb, a reclusive writer, lives by the seaside in a small town in Kent during the outbreak of World War II.

Extremely reluctantly, she is entrusted with the care of a young boy, Frank, who has come from London as part of a mass evacuation of young children.

Despite her misgivings, Alice and Frank eventually begin to bond and she opens about her early life, in particular her previous connection with Mbatha-Raw's Vera, a part of her life she has never spoken about before...

With the film arriving in cinemas tomorrow (July 31st), we spoke to Arterton and Swale about the making of Summerland and their ongoing working relationship across stage and screen...

Summerland is released into UK cinemas on July 31st and will be released on DVD later this year.
