Over the next two weeks, we're going to be previewing 100 of 2019's best movies. We begin today with the superheroes...

 

Avengers: Endgame

Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and so many more...

Director: The Russo Brothers

Release Date: April 26th

 

Here it is, the final chapter in phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a film which promises to have devastating consequences. 

The film picks up directly after the events of Avengers: Infinity War with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch and many, many more all back to star.

Katherine Langford, star of Love, Simon and 13 Reasons Why, joins the cast for this new film, in an as yet unnamed role. Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada will also have a small role in the new film.

Anthony and Joe Russo return to direct, with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely supplying the script.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain.

Director: Simon Kinberg

Release Date: June 7th

 

Originally due in the autumn of 2018, the film has been twice delayed, but looks finally set to arrive in the summer of 2019. 

Set a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, things are looking rosy for the X-Men who have become celebrities and public sensations, leading Professor X to encourage the team to do more as superheroes.

Unfortunately, one mission takes them into space, and an unaccounted-for accident greatly empowers Jean Grey, but at the cost of losing control of herself and acting irrationally. All the while, an alien empress seeks to use Jean for her own intentions.

For this movie, Simon Kinberg makes his first appearance as director having served as a writer and producer in the franchise for more than a decade...

 

 

Captain Marvel 

Starring: Brie Larson, Jude Law, Ben Mendohlsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, Mckenna Grace and Clark Gregg

Release Date: March 8th

 

After a long off-screen gestation, Captain Marvel finds arrives on the big screen in 2019. 

Brie Larson takes the role of Captain Marvel, which is the story of Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident.

The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy project and flight, which is just as well as an alien force is on its way to test her newfound powers...

 

 

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Starring: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Michael Keaton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Samuel L. Jackson, Marisa Tomei and Jacob Batalon

Release Date:  July 5th

 

Tom Holland takes centre stage once more as Peter Parker after a spell of films under the Avengers banner. 

This movie is set after next year's blockbuster Avengers: Endgame and follows Peter Parker and his friends go on summer vacation to Europe.

Sadly, it quickly goes awry and there Peter finds himself trying to save his friends against a villain known as Mysterio...

 

Alita: Battle Angel

Starring: Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein and Jackie Earle Haley.

Director: Robert Rodriguez

Release Date: February 6th

 

Yukito Kishiro's hugely successful Battle Angel Alita manga is given the big screen treatment with Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron overseeing as producer.

Alita is a weapon created by Waltz’s mysterious Dr Ido while searching for cyborg parts and made into a lethal, dangerous being. She cannot remember who she is, or where she came from. But we’re about to find out...

 

 

The New Mutants

Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga.

Director: Josh Boone

Release Date: August 2nd

 

This dark, dark X-Men spin-off follows five young mutants, all of whom are just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will. Together they will fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

Williams plays Wolfsbane, a girl struggling to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf, while Taylor-Joy will play Magik, a girl who has learned sorcery and uses teleportation discs to travel. Magik is the sister of Colossus, most recently seen in 2016's Deadpool.

Newcomers Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt and Charlie Heaton play Sunspot, Moonstar and Cannonball respectively, while Elysium star Alice Braga plays Dr Cecilia Reyes, a mutant and medical doctor who acts as a mentor for the new mutants.

 

 

Hellboy

Starring: David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Sasha Lane, Ian McShane

Director: Neil Marshall

Release Date: April 12th

 

Talk of a third instalment of Hellboy, the demon who somehow ended up fighting for the other side, has been constant since the release of Hellboy: The Golden Army, but it never quite came together.

Instead, we get a reboot made without original director Guillermo Del Toro and original star Ron Perlman, with Game Of Thrones director Neil Marshall behind the camera and Stranger Things star David Harbour in the title role. 

The movie features Milla Jovovich as the Blood Queen, a medieval sorceress with grand plans to destroy the world, who Hellboy must stop.  

 

 

Glass

Starring: Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, Sarah Paulson, Anya Taylor-Joy

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Release Date: January 18th

 

M. Night Shyamalan unveils the third and final instalment in the Eastrail 177 trilogy, which unites 2000's Unbreakable and 2016's Split.

Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson will be reprising their Unbreakable roles, while James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy will be returning as their Split characters. Sarah Paulson also joins the cast. 

We follow Willis's security guard David Dunn who uses his supernatural abilities to track McAvoy's Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has 24 personalities, while Jackson's Elijah Price, going by "Mr Glass", emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

 

 

Shazam!

Starring: Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Faithe Herman, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Djimon Hounsou

Director: David F. Sandberg

Release Date: April 5th

 

Zachary Levi leads the way in this new big budget DC adventure. 

Levi plays  Billy Batson, a teenage boy who can transform via the magic word "Shazam" into an adult superhero after a chance meeting with a magician.

Quickly, Billy and his new foster brother Freddy Freeman must learn what Billy's new powers are and how to use them in order to stop the villain Dr Thaddeus Sivana from wielding powers of his own...

 

 

Joker

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, Shea Whigham

Director: Todd Phillips

Release Date: October 4th

 

Joaquin Phoenix takes on the iconic villain in this very different take on the much-loved character. 

Set in 1981, Phoenix is Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who is driven insane and becomes a psychopathic murderer...
