The Drop - Five Reasons You'll Love It

Crime drama adaptation The Drop stars Tom Hardy as a Brooklyn bartender who gets caught up in the world of organised crime when the bar he works in is used for money-laundering ‘drops’. James Gandolfini and Noomi Rapace co-star. We caught an early screening and here are five reasons you'll love it...

It's a faithful adaptation of a gripping book…

The Drop is an adaptation of author Dennis Lehane's 2009 short story Animal Rescue, directed by Belgian filmmaker Michaël R. Roskam. Lehane himself wrote the screenplay which manages to faithfully uphold many of the novel's searing shocks in its transition from page to screen successfully conveying an air of tension within the frost-bitten Brooklyn location.

It's an old-school crime thriller…

Roskam takes Lehane's script and delivers a taut foray into the world of Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy), Cousing Marv (James Gandolfini) and his 'drop' bar where organised crime mobs frequently visit in order to launder their money. With blurred allegiances, seemingly unrelated plot strands and film noir attributes (Noomi Rapace's Nadia being a femme fatale of sorts), The Drop has the feel of an old-fashioned crime thriller despite being set in the modern day.

Tom Hardy delivers yet another credible performance...

Hardy's gentle church-going bar owner, a pleasant man of few words who is continually drawn into hazardous situations, provides the film with its heart. His friendship with Rapace’s Nadia – whom he meets after rescuing an injured dog from the trash outside her home – is tenderly handled, with Hardy adding a layer of mysteriousness to his past.

James Gandolfini shines in his final screen role…

Sadly, The Drop is notable for being the last screen role of the late James Gandolfini. Assuming the role of bar owner Marv, the actor is able to fill the shoes of the tender yet dangerous characters he played so well one final time.

If you're a dog lover, you're in luck…

The dog that Bob Saginowski (Hardy) saves near the beginning of the film may be a simple device to propel events of the film onwards, but it doesn’t mean the terrier –named Rocco and played by canines T and J – doesn’t steal every single scene they are in.
