The Favourite - What You Need To Know

A historical drama like no other, The Favourite wowed audiences and critics alike when it hit cinemas earlier this year. Now it's heading for DVD shelves and here is everything you need to know about it...

Who’s in it?

Olivia Colman leads the way as Queen Anne, with Rachel Weisz playing Sarah Churchill and Emma Stone portraying Abigail Hill.

Starring alongside them are Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn, James Smith and Mark Gatiss

And who’s behind the camera?

Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, he of The Lobster, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and Dogtooth fame, is on both writing and directing duty here.

What’s the plot?

We find ourselves in 1708 and in the court of Queen Anne.

Anne is in a bad way, preferring to spend her days racing ducks and playing with her 17 rabbits, one for each of the children she has lost.

In her absence, her confidante, adviser and furtive lover Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, effectively rules the country through her influence over the Queen.

Then, everything is shaken up when Abigail Hill, a younger cousin of Churchill's, bankrupted by her Father's reckless spending, arrives in search of employment.

Quickly seeing the Queen's fragile physical and mental health, Hill sees an opportunity to resurrect her name and curry favour with the Queen. This leads to an almighty showdown with her cousin...

Does it deliver?

276 Award nominations, 119 wins, including a Best Actress Oscar for Colman, yes, it’s safe to say this unusual, madcap historical drama delivers. It's beautifully shot, hilarious, sad and full of spark and invention. This film deserves repeat viewings. Many, many repeat viewings.

The Favourite is released into hmv stores on Monday (May 13th).
