The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson to create all-new Star Wars trilogy
With just a few weeks to go until the next instalment in the Star Wars saga arrives in cinemas, news has emerged that Disney and the film's director Rian Johnson are planning a whole new trilogy of films set in the Star Wars universe, extending the franchise well beyond the third trilogy currently in progress and masterminded by J.J. Abrams.
Plans for another three films are still in the early stages and there's very little detail as yet, although it is understood from the information published on the official Star Wars website that the new films will aim to move away from the Skywalker story that has formed the central thread of the Star Wars films to date and introduce a new set of characters.
Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm's president, said in a statement: “We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
Ram Bergman has also signed on to produce the new trilogy, with he and Johnson issuing a joint statement of their own about the new project: “We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi, Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
The Last Jedi is due to hit UK cinema screens on December 14th, you can find a trailer for Johnson's film below...
