The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – What You Need To Know
Before their award-winning efforts with their animated Spider-Man movie last year, Phil Lord and Chris Miller already had an acclaimed animated adventure under their belts with The LEGO Movie, a 2014 family comedy that dispensed with LEGO's franchise tie-in model to create an adventure all of their own.
After the success of the film, a sequel seemed inevitable and, sure enough, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part made its way into cinemas in February this year.
Next week (Monday June 3rd) the sequel makes its arrival in stores, here's everything you need to know about the next chapter in the LEGO adventure...
Who's in it?
Chris Pratt returns as the voice of Emmet Brickowski, leading an impressive voice cast that includes Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Tiffany Haddish, Charlie Day, Nick Offerman, Maya Rudolph, Jason Momoa, Jonah Hill and Will Ferrell.
And who's directing?
Trolls and Shrek Forever After director Mike Mitchell steps into the shoes of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the original LEGO Movie. However, Lord and Miller have been retained as producers and have also provided the screenplay for the sequel.
What's the plot?
The story initially picks up almost exactly where its predecessor left off, with the unwelcome arrival of the Duplo aliens, who rapidly begin to make a mess of Bricksburg. In the real world, we learn that this is the result of Finn and his sister Bianca being given the chance to play with their father's old LEGO sets.
We then jump to five years later, with Bianca taking some of Finn's toys down into the basement to play with, by which time Bricksburg has been so totally destroyed that's it's now a wasteland nicknamed 'Apocalypseburg' by its hardening residents. Emmet is still keen to settle down with Lucy, but the arrival of a doll named General Mayhem soon proves to be an obstacle to Emmet's hops of a peaceful life.
Mayhem announces that Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi of the Systar System (Bianca's bedroom) wishes to marry the leader of Apocalypseburg, before kidnapping some its residents, including Batman, Metalbeard, Benny and Lucy.
Emmet hatches a plan to rescue Lucy and the others, transforming his house into a spaceship and travelling through the 'stairgate' (the stairs down to the basement) and heading to the Systar System. However, in the midst of battling against Mayhem and his forces it soon becomes apparent that both sides are under threat from an impending event known as 'Armamageddon', which threatens to wipe out the entire LEGO universe.
Does it deliver?
The LEGO Movie was a huge hit with audiences and any fears you might have had about the change of director will melt away within the first few minutes. Lord and Miller's distinctive witty style is still very much present and the sequel has all the laughs, songs and adventures you'd expect. What's not to like?
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is available in hmv stores from Monday June 3rd
