The cast of The Matrix Resurrections open up about breathing new life into the iconic franchise...

It's been 18 years since we were last treated to an instalment of The Matrix, the science-fiction franchise like no other.

First released in 1999, The Matrix followed Neo, a computer hacker Neo who is invited to a forbidding underworld. Once there, he discovers the shocking truth, that the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.

A daring, stylish, futuristic and thrilling blockbuster, the film, which took over $460 million on a budget of just over $63 million, won critical acclaim and four Oscars. Two sequels followed, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both released in 2003. That was the end of a trilogy and the expected end of the franchise, but now, in 2021, it lives again, with The Matrix Resurrections.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss return to star, with Jonathon Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Yahya Abdul-Mateen among the new additions to the cast.

Aleksander Hemon and Cloud Atlas writer David Mitchell have provided work on the script alongside director Lana Wachowski, though her sister Lilly, who co-directed the originals, has not worked on the new movie.

The Matrix Resurrections will be released into UK cinemas on December 22nd, but, ahead of that, we spoke to Reeves, Moss, Chopra Jonas, Henwick and Abdul-Mateen about the rebirth of the iconic franchise...
