Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

There wasn’t much expectation behind 2014’s The Maze Runner. Though James Dashner’s young adult novel series had sold well, it wasn’t a household name and the film, which had a first time director, a largely unknown cast and a production budget well below the normal for a dystopian thriller on a big scale, wasn’t pegged to be a big hit. But, as it turned out, it was, raking it almost $350 million at the box office and meant a sequel titled The Scorch Trials was swiftly commissioned.

The first movie told the story of Dylan O’Brien’s Thomas, who wakes up remembering nothing but his own name and emerges into a world with nothing but teenage boys who have been trapped inside a nightmarish maze and try to escape each and every day.

Now, after escaping their prison, things haven’t improved a great deal, the group are left searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Taken in by a mysterious group, the gang become suspicious and decide to break out, risking their lives in the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with terrible obstacles.

The movie is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray steelbook exclusive to hmv on Monday (February 1st) and available to purchase on the right-hand side of the page.

We caught an early screening of the heart-pounding sequel and have rounded up five reasons you’ll love it…

The action sequences are awesome…

Now out into the open and away from the maze, director Wes Ball has made the most of his expanded surroundings to create some truly exhilarating action sequences.

The new arrivals are on top form…

As well as the returning gang from the first movie, there are a fair few new arrivals. Parenthood's Rosa Salazar, Mud star Jacob Lofland, Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito, Game Of Thrones pair Nathalie Emmanuel and Aidan Gillen, Six Feet Under's Lili Taylor and The Green Mile star Barry Pepper all join the cast and all bring their A-game, particularly Gillen, who plays the menacing Janson with great aplomb.

The plot is all go…

This whole movie takes place on the run with the gladers seldom in the same place for more than a few minutes, it gives the whole film a thrilling pace and frenzied atmosphere.

The monsters are terrifying…

We won’t give too much away, but once the gang make it out into the Scorch they’re met by some unpleasant types who are after their blood, prepare yourselves for a fright...

It all set things up for a thrilling finale…

We know that the new instalment The Death Cure is already in pre-production and just as well, because things are set up for a thrilling finale. It’s due in early 2017 and that can’t get here soon enough.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is released on DVD on Monday (February 1st).
