The Meg - Five Reasons You'll Love It

The last time we saw Jason Statham on the big screen, he was facing down the man mountain that is Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in the eighth instalment of Fast & Furious, but in his new blockbuster, he's found himself dealing with a much bigger problem.

Statham leads the way in The Meg as former Naval captain and expert diver Jonas Taylor, who is recruited for a deep-sea mission to rescue Chinese scientists under attack from a giant white shark, not just any shark, a pre-historic 75-foot-long great white shark known as the Megalodon.

Starring alongside Statham are Jessica McNamee, Li Bingbing, Ruby Rose and Rainn Wilson, with Jon Turteltaub in the director's chair, who brings Steve Alten's 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror to the big screen.

The film begins taking large bites out of DVD players from Monday (December 10th) and is available to pre-order in hmv's online store here, but before that, we caught an early screening of this monster movie and have rounded up five reasons why you'll love it...

The shark is quite something...

The detail on the monster is quite incredible, you'll be wowed by its size and scale.

Jason Statham is as charming as ever...

Statham's ability to sustain a career as an action hero is in no small part down to his ability to follow every death-defying setpiece with a wink and a smile. That's never more needed than when you're doing battle with a 75-foot shark...

Rainn Wilson is an excellent presence...

The Office star plays Jack Morris, a brash billionaire who funded the original exploration that unleashed the monster. He's a slightly madcap presence, but he's got some great lines.

It doesn't take itself too seriously...

Much like Statham's tongue in cheek persona, this whole movie has that feeling. It's a big action chomp-em-up, but it's a knowing one.

And it's a lot of fun...

Jason Statham, a great supporting cast, a CGI shark, it's a recipe for a great night in, or out, and it lives up to that billing!

The Meg is in cinemas now and is available to pre-order on DVD in hmv's online store here.
