The Railway Man: What You Need To Know
The Railway Man, the emotionally draining drama about a British prisoner of war who sets out to confront his tormentor, is released on DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday (May 5th), here's what you need to know about it…
What’s the plot?
The film tells the story of Eric Lomax, a former British Army officer, who was captured during World War II, taken to a Japanese labour camp and tormented as a prisoner of war. Now much older, Lomax discovers that the man responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him about what he did to him.
Who’s in it?
Colin Firth stars as the older Lomax, with War Horse star Jeremy Irvine playing the younger version. Firth's Lomax is helped on his quest by his wife Patti, played by Nicole Kidman and his best friend Findlay, portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård. 47 Ronin's Hiroyuki Sanada and Australian actress Marta Dusseldorp also play key roles.
Does it deliver?
It's low-key, it's understated, but it's shot with a grace and poise that gives Kidman and Firth room to shine in the lead roles. A gentle Sunday afternoon watch rather than a Friday night smash em up.
