The Revenant - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

After bringing BiRDMAN, a fiendishly complex drama, to the screen in 2014, you'd have thought director Alejandro González Iñárritu might fancy doing something more straightforward, like a nice drama or a romantic comedy. Not a chance; his new movie The Revenant is a proper epic. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domnhall Gleeson and Will Poulter, the movie is based on the life of legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass.

Set in the 19th century in the bleak heart of America, DiCaprio plays Glass, a man who makes a living as a fur trapper. While hunting he is mauled by a bear and, after carrying him for a day or so, his companions make the decision to leave Hardy’s Fitzgerald, Poulter’s Bridger and Glass' son behind to look after him while he fights with death.

But when it looks like he won’t be going anytime soon Fitzgerald loses patience, kills his son and leaves Glass to die, only for him to survive and set out to get revenge on the man who betrayed him.

It is available to pre-order it on DVD, Blu-Ray and exclusive hmv Blu-Ray steelbook here ahead of its release on Monday (June 6th), but we caught an early screening of the movie and have rounded up five reasons you’ll love it…

Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance is an absolute tour de force...

It’s not as if DiCaprio’s CV isn’t full of towering performances, but here he’s on a whole other level. This is a punishing, visceral performance and one that you cannot take your eyes off. Just give him the Oscar now. Seriously.

Tom Hardy is an excellent villain…

As the gruff, dastardly Fitzgerald, Hardy is a conniving and captivating villain. He gave up Suicide Squad to finish this film and has joked ever since that he hopes he won’t regret it. He won’t...

It looks beautiful…

The beauty of the vast wildernesses that you can still find in the middle of America are captured incredibly by Iñárritu, it’s just a stunning watch.

You know it was hell to shoot…

We’ve all read interviews where actors have told us they’ve gone through hell to get the job done, but you always take it with a pinch of salt. But this time we reckon all the stories are true. Between the blood, snow, dirt and endless rain, we know this was hell to shoot, it’s all up there on screen.

It’s a lengthy watch, but you’ll never be bored…

The movie clocks in at a weighty 156 minutes, but it whips by in a flash, whether it’s the gut-wrenching fight sequences, the beautiful scenery or the sparse, but wisely chosen dialogue, you won’t be bored for a moment.

The Revenant is released on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-Ray steelbook exclusive to hmv on Monday (June 6th).
