Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour

Universal Pictures UK

Gary Oldman took home the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in this lavish new biopic from director Joe Wright.

The movie begins with Churchill newly elected as Prime Minister of Great Britain and facing one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation.

As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a sceptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

Wright directs, working from a script from Anthony McCarten, the adaptor of the Oscar-winning The Theory Of Everything, with Ben Mendelsohn, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane and Ronald Pickup also in key roles.

Sam Claflin leads the way in this charged WWII drama.

Set in March 1918, we follow C-Company, led by a war-weary Claflin's Captain Stanhope, which arrives in northern France to take its turn in the front-line trenches. Told that a German offensive is imminent Stanhope drowns his fears in whisky whilst the officers and their cook attempt to distract themselves in their dugout with talk of food and life before the war.

They are joined by Butterfield's Raleigh, a young new officer fresh out of training excited about his first real posting, and a chance to serve under Stanhope. Raleigh’s naivety serves as a stark contrast to the other men’s impending fear as the tension rises and the attack draws ever closer.

The film has been directed by Saul Dibb, best known for work on Suite Francaise, it is adapted from R. C. Sheriff's play of the same name.
