Timothée Chalamet shares first picture as Willy Wonka
With a new film charting the early life of Roald’s Dahl’s irrepressible chocolatier Willy Wonka currently in production, actor Timothée Chalamet has shared a first look at his portrayal of a young Wonka in a new image from the set of the film, featuring himself in full costume.

Set to arrive in cinemas in 2023, Wonka is being directed by Paul King, the man behind Paddington and its sequel, and will star Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka alongside a cast that also includes Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson, Matt Lucas, Keegan-Michael Key, Jim Carter and Sally Hawkins.
Simon Farnaby, with whom King co-wrote both Paddington films, also stars and has once again co-written the script for Wonka alongside King himself, which is understood to feature Wonka’s first meeting with the Oompa-Loompas.
Chalamet will become the third actor to portray Willy Wonka on the big screen, following in the footsteps of Gene Wilder’s masterful performance in Mel Stuart’s 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Johnny Depp, who appeared in Tim Burton’s 2005 reboot Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (named after the original title of Roald Dahl’s 1964 children’s novel).
Filming on Wonka is currently underway and while there’s no UK release date just yet, King’s film is scheduled to make its debut in US cinemas on March 17 2023.
