Timothée Chalamet to play Willy Wonka in new origin story from Paddington director
Timothée Chalamet is to play a young Willy Wonka in a new origin story.
Chalamet, who will next be seen in the sci-fi epic Dune, will star in the movie, which is simply titled Wonka.
The star will play the iconic inventor and chocolate maker with the story focusing on a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory.
According to Deadline, a key part of the story will be told in song and dance, which is part of the reason for the delay in announcing a lead as there will be an extensive rehearsal process.
Chalamet will work with Paddington director Paul King on the film, King has written the screenplay with longtime collaborator Simon Farnaby.
The film marks Warner Brothers' third adaptation of Roald Dahl's story, the first came in 1971 with Gene Wilder as Wonka, and the second in 2005 starred Johnny Depp in the role.
