Trainspotting 2 gets a release date

The long-awaited sequel to Trainspotting has been given a release date as filming formally begins. Click below to watch an official announcement from producers Sony.

The movie, which reunites the 1996 classic's original cast of Robert Carlyle, Ewan Bremner, Kelly MacDonald, Jonny Lee Miller and Ewan McGregor, along with director Danny Boyle, will hit cinemas on January 27th in 2017. Filming formally begins today (May 16th).

Trainspotting was based on the novel by Irvine Welsh and told the story of a group of heroin addicts in late 1980s Edinburgh.

The sequel is still currently known as T2, with the formal title to be confirmed. The novel on which the original film was based was given a sequel, Porno, in 2002 by its author Irvine Welsh, but it is unlikely that Boyle will stick with that.
