Transcendence: What You Need To Know
Wally Pfister, the man responsible for making Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy look so wonderful, made his directorial bow with technological terror Transcendence earlier this year. It’s released on DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday (August 25th), here’s what you need to know about it…
What’s the plot?
It goes a little like this: Will Caster is a brilliant scientist who works at the forefront of artificial intelligence research and development. When the film begins, he is working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. Now world famous, he has also become the primary target for R.I.F.T, an extremist anti-technology group, who take the decision to mortally wound him in a shooting. Dying before her eyes, Will’s wife Evelyn decides that she must save his brilliant mind by uploading it into a super, quantum computer he has developed. Trouble is, now they’ve uploaded his consciousness, they can’t control it…
Who’s in it?
It’s a pretty starry line-up. Johnny Depp leads the way as Will Caster, with Rebecca Hall playing his wife Evelyn and Paul Bettany as their colleague Max. House Of Cards star Kate Mara plays Bree, leader of R.I.F.T, with Cillian Murphy portraying Donald Buchanan, an FBI agent tasked with stopping Will, he’s assisted in this task by a veteran FBI man Joseph Tagger, played by Morgan Freeman.
Does it deliver?
As sci-fi for sci-fi fans, absolutely, it's got some great visuals and, with Pfister at the helm, stunning to look at. It didn't quite have the crossover potential that the likes of Gravity and The Matrix, but it does the job.
