Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski frontrunner to direct Top Gun 2
Joseph Kosinski, best known for director Tron: Legacy, is the frontrunner to take charge of the Top Gun sequel.
Plans for the sequel hit the news yesterday (May 24th), when Tom Cruise revealed that it would be getting underway in the next year.
Now, according to Variety, reports have emerged that Cruise has been meeting with directors and Kosinski, who directed the star in Oblivion, is his choice to take the film forward.
The report also suggests that the sequel will be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters and will explore the end of an era of dogfighting, a key feature of the original film.
Writer Justin Marks, the man who penned the script for Disney's new live-action version of The Jungle Book, had been tapped to write the sequel back in 2014, but it's not known if that is the script in active development.
Top Gun was released in 1986 and starred Cruise, Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis and told the story of a group of students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school, who compete to be best in the class.
