Twilight: New Moon director Chris Weitz to write first Star Wars spin-off
Chris Weitz, best known for directing Twilight: New Moon, is to write the first Star Wars spin-off.
Last year it was confirmed that two Star Wars stand-alone films would be produced alongside the new trilogy of movies. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will direct the first of the pair, with Chronicle's Josh Trank directing the second.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Weitz has signed up to rewrite the first spin-off after After Earth scribe Gary Whitta left the project. Weitz has recently completed work on the script for Disney's new lavish adaptation of Cinderella.
Last week it was reported that The Theory Of Everything star Felicity Jones, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo leading lady Rooney Mara and Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany were all due to take part in screen tests for a key role in the new film.
The report states that testing and reading for the movie took place in the UK in December and has now moved to the US as producers begin to assemble the key cast. Little is known about the plot at this point, although there have been rumours that it will focused on the early life of Han Solo, but nothing confirmed.
