Picard is due to begin its run in January next year and will not only see Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his much-loved role as Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but will also include appearances for several other characters from the series, including Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, Jeri Ryan as former Borg drone Seven of Nine and Brent Spiner as Data, the ship's android.
Originally running for seven seasons from 1987 until its final episode in 1994, Star Trek: The Next Generation helped revive the franchise originally created in the 1960s by Gene Roddenberry and became the first of many spin-offs, the most recent being Star Trek: Discovery.
The new series is being created by Alex Kurtzman, who has previously worked as a screenwriter on J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot of the franchise and one of its sequels, 2013's Star Trek: Into Darkness, while novelist and screenwriter Michael Chabon has been appointed as showrunner on the new series.
Star Trek: Picard is being made for Amazon Prime and will launch early next year on January 24th.
