An Elvis Presley biopic from director Baz Luhrmann has been in the works for a while now, but a first trailer arrived on Friday offered the first glimpse at Luhrmann’s upcoming film featuring Austin Butler in the starring role – take a look below:

Butler stars in Elvis alongside a cast that includes Tom Hanks as Presley’s fearsome manager Colonel Tom Parker, Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as blues legend B.B. King and British singer-songwriter Yola as rock-and-roll pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

The story takes us through Presley’s formative years and his discovery of gospel and blues music, as well as his first meeting with Parker and his manager’s efforts to mould him into a superstar, but the trailer also offers a glimpse into the political backdrop to Elvis’ story, including the civil rights movement and the deaths of both President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is due to make its arrival on UK cinema screens on June 24.
