You Were Never Really Here - Five Reasons You'll Love It

Director Lynne Ramsay has never gone in for light and frothy with her movies, but her new opus, You Were Never Really Here is a particularly harrowing choice.

Following her success with the adaptation of We Need To Talk About Kevin, she takes on another adaptation, this time a novella by Jonathan Ames with Joaquin Phoenix in the starring role.

Phoenix plays Joe, an army veteran who tracks down missing girls for a living, who finds himself caught up in a conspiracy that threatens to turn deadly...

The Inherent Vice star leads with Ekaterina Samsonov, Alex Manette, John Doman and Judith Roberts in the supporting cast. Ramsay writes and directs, while Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood provides the score.

The film on DVD shelves on Monday (July 2nd) and is available to pre-order on DVD here in hmv's online store here.

As the film drops onto the big screen, we caught an early screening of the movie and have rounded up five reasons why you'll love this brutal thriller...

Joaquin Phoenix wows...

Ramsay has been quoted in various outlets as saying that the Inherent Vice star was her only choice for the role and you can see why. He brings so much to it and there's an anarchic derangement to his take on the character that is mesmerising to watch.

It's brutal, but never gratuitous...

Given Joe's weapon of choice is a hammer (in fact there's one particularly menacing scene where he goes to pick out a brand new one), you'd expect a lot of the violence to be on the extreme side, but Ramsay draws back. Lots of the violence is offscreen or handled with incredible dignity.

Jonny Greenwood's score is incredible...

One minute it's stabs of electronica, the next gliding guitars, all the way back to sweeping orchestral sounds, Greenwood's journey as a composer continues to be a fascinating one.

The film has so much drive...

At a miserly 90 minutes, Ramsay doesn't mess about with any diversions, this is all go and it moves at a great pace.

Ramsay continues to surprise and move you...

From the uncompromising Ratcatcher to her chilling take on We Need To Talk About Kevin, the Scottish director's work is always interesting and invigorating. This is one of her finest works to date.

You Were Never Really Here is released on DVD on Monday (July 2nd) and is available to pre-order on DVD here in hmv's online store here.
