Your Next Box Set: 30 Rock

On the lookout for a new boxset to spend your evenings devouring? Each week, will be recommending you a series that you will have wishing those cold nights would go for a good while longer…

This week, we recommend 30 Rock, which finally ending its stupendous and hilarious run of seven series late last year…

What it is?

Set behind the scenes of a sketch comedy The Girlie Show, 30 Rock follows the ups and downs of Liz Lemon, the show's head writer and her battle to keep her arrogant boss off her back, her squabbling stars in order and her personal life together, with hilarious consequences.

The show was created by Tina Fey and is loosely based on Fey's experiences when she worked as head writer for Saturday Night Live.

Who’s in it?

Fey stars as the show's hopeful, clumsy and utterly loveable heroine Liz Lemon, head writer of The Girlie Show (TGS), unlucky in love and constantly battling to keep the planet-sized egos of her stars, co-writers and boss aligned. Alec Baldwin plays Jack Donaghy, her suave and sophisticated boss, who finds himself meddling far too often.

Liz's life is made more complicated by Tracy Jordan (played by Tracy Morgan), the loose cannon and unreliable star of TGS, and Jenna Maroney (played by Ally McBeal's Jane Krawokski), the hopelessly needy original star of TGS.

Constant light relief is provided by Kenneth, the permanently cheerful and obedient page and the various members of TGS's writing staff.

Why should I watch it?

If you're worried that the show's premise looks a bit knowing, then don't be, the quick wit and hilarious situations the characters constantly find themselves in are absolutely universal. It's brilliantly funny.

Describe the show in three words…

Witty, sharp and hilarious.

The seventh and final series of 30 Rock will be released on DVD on Monday (May 5th) and will be available from hmv stores across the UK.
