Your Next Box Set: Blue Bloods
On the lookout for a new box set to spend your evenings devouring? Each week, hmv.com will be recommending you a series that will swallow up your whole life until your finish the last episode...
This week, it’s Blue Bloods…
What is it?
It’s an old school police show with a unique twist. Instead of focusing on a precinct or pair of detectives, it centres around a family of New York cops. Heading up the family is NYPD Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, with his adult children all involved in the force in some way. Oldest child Danny is a happily married, old-fashioned police detective. Only daughter Erin is an Assistant District Defence Attorney and a single mother. Youngest son Jamie has just graduated from Harvard and starting out as a rookie cop. Frank’s middle son Joe was killed in the line duty, and the investigation into his death forms much of the first season. Rounding out the family is Frank’s gruff father Henry, a retired Police Commissioner himself.
Who’s in it?
None other than Magnum P.I. himself Tom Selleck stars as Frank and is the backbone of the show. Donnie Wahlberg, brother of Mark and formerly of New Kids On The Block, plays Danny, with Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes and Len Cariou rounding out the main cast.
Why should I watch it?
Because it combines traditional police procedurals with some very strong character work. The family dynamic manages to separate it from your average cop show, and every episode includes a pivotal dinner table where the family gather and inevitably bicker about whatever cases they are working on this week. It’s good choice if you want something meatier than CSI and its spin-offs, yet isn’t as heavy as The Wire or True Detective.
