Your Next Box Set: Girls
On the lookout for a new box set to spend your evenings devouring? Each week, hmv.com will be recommending you a series that will swallow up your whole life until your finish the last episode...
This week, as the third series hits DVD shelves and the fourth series begins its life on TV, it’s HBO’s smash hit drama Girls…
What is it?
The basic premise of Girls is this, we’re in modern day New York and we follow the everyday travails, highs, lows, hook-ups, break-ups and endless awkwardness of four very different twenty-something girls. There’s Hannah, the aspiring writer; Marnie, the kooky art gallery assistant and cousins Jessa and Shoshanna.
Who’s in it?
Lena Dunham, the show’s creator and writer, also stars as Hannah, with Alison Williams playing Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna.
Adam Driver, who you’ll have seen in Inside Llewyn Davis and will see in Stars Wars: The Force Awakens, plays love interest Adam, with Alex Karpovsky, Christopher Abbott and Andrew Rannells also popping up regularly.
Why should I watch it?
The show’s description really doesn’t do it much justice. It is a celebration of the kooky, offbeat and downright bizarre relationships that the girls have with each other, their love interests and their parents. It is also, hilariously funny, and that’s what will keep you coming back, episode after episode.
Describe the show in three words…
Witty, sharp and sparky.
The third series of Girls is released onto DVD on Monday (January 12th).
