Your Next Box Set: Seinfeld
On the lookout for a new boxset to spend your evenings devouring? Each week, hmv.com will be recommending you a series that you will have wishing those cold nights would go for a good while longer…
This week we recommend classic US sitcom Seinfeld...
What is it?
Seinfeld is a seminal, expertly written and supremely timed American sitcom, spanning nine seasons throughout nine years. The show revolves primarily around semi-fictional stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld, partly on stage throwing out gag after gag, mostly in his New York City neighbourhood solving bizarre scenarios (mostly from the hilarious doing of his eccentric neighbour, Cosmo Kramer). Co-written by Larry David (also of Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Jerry Seinfeld himself, the series began airing in 1989 on NBC. Since its time, it has been hailed as one of the most original, indisputably funny and intelligent comedy shows ever to grace the home screen.
Who’s in it?
The show has four main characters: protagonist Jerry Seinfeld; his one-time girlfriend and remaining friend Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus); his neighbour Kramer (Michael Richards); and perhaps most significantly where memorable quotations are concerned, his invaluable, priceless, misanthropic best friend George Costanza (Jason Alexander). These four intertwine seamlessly with a whole host of carefully selected minor characters, too.
Why should I watch it?
In the most honest sense, any fan of sharp comedy or fun in general would face a huge self-inflicted disservice not to, at the very least, give Seinfeld a try. Each episode is just 20 minutes long, so this is perfect viewing if you prefer your TV shows cut into short and sweet bursts rather than hour-long slow-burners. Although Seinfeld screams everything you’d associate with its era, it holds up brilliantly in 2014, and there’s sure to be at least one character you relate to in many ways.
