Your Next Box Set: The Wire

On the lookout for a new boxset to spend your evenings devouring? Each week, will be recommending you a series that you will have wishing those cold nights would go for a good while longer…

This week, we recommend The Wire, the hard as nails drama from the streets of Baltimore with a very British core…

What it is?

In very basic terms, The Wire is a show set inside the Baltimore drug scene, seen through the eyes of drug dealers, and police officers. However it is much much more than that.

Each season the show focus on a different element of the city of Baltimore, with the illegal drug trade, the seaport system, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media all being the subject of series. Each time we see the corruption, the greed, the compromise and the grit that's evident every day on the streets of this cold, hard city.

Who’s in it?

British gent Dominic West leads the charges as Detective Jimmy McNulty, with Wood Harris and Idris Elba playing drug kingpins Avon Barksdale and Stringer Bell respectively. Sonja Sohn and Wendell Pierce also star as McNulty's fellow homicide detectives.

Other key cast members include Michael K. Williams, who plays stick-up man Omar Little, John Dornan who portrays police commissioner William Rawls and Deidre Lovejoy, who plays assistant commissioner Rhonda Pearlman. In truth though the cast list as long as you like to be true, one of The Wire's key strengths is that there are no throwaway characters.

Why should I watch it?

There's a reason why critics call this show the greatest TV drama of all time. The dialogue is incredibly taut, with a brutal beauty all of its own, the characters are compelling and repellent at the same time and it’s supremely addictive, you'll amaze yourself with how many episodes you can do with one sitting.

Describe the show in three words…

Gritty, gripping and utterly addictive. Four words, damnit…
