Your Next Box Set: The X-Files
On the lookout for a new boxset to spend your evenings devouring? Each week, hmv.com will be recommending you a series that you will have wishing those cold nights would go for a good while longer. This week, we recommend the ultimate in sci-fi, it’s The X-Files...
What it is?
The basic premise is thus: Two FBI agents, Fox Mulder, he’s the believer and Dana Scully, she’s the sceptic. Together they investigate the strange and unexplained while hidden forces work to impede their efforts in solving the crimes. They do this a lot, 201 episodes and two full length feature films in all. But trust us, it'll fly by...
Who’s in it?
David Duchovny plays Fox Mulder, the driven, obsessive FBI agent and true believer in the extra-terrestrial. Gillian Anderson is Dana Scully, a trained doctor who bases every decision solely on hard science, she is the perfect antidote to Mulder’s wild theorising.
The pair are the show’s anchors, but Mitch Peleggi (who would later go on to star in Sons Of Anarchy) also starred for the great majority of the show’s run, playing FBI assistant director Walter Skinner.
There’s also the small matter of ‘The Smoking Man’, a mysterious villain played by William B.Davis, he shows up on and off throughout the series’ run.
Why should I watch it?
It’s gripping, superbly written and keeps coming back with fresh and exciting story lines week after week. We’re inundated with quality TV at the moment, but back in the 1990s show with real characters, big budgets and great writing were thin on the ground. This was definitely one of them.
The only problem is that there are nine seasons of the show to get through, so you’ll be kissing goodbye to your evenings for a long while. Maybe wait until after the World Cup, because you're going to be hearing that iconic theme tune for a long, long time.
Describe the show in three words…
Gripping, groundbreaking, gigantic.
The X-Files is on sale in various formats in hmv stores all over the UK.
