What are the 10 best films where men dress up as women?

So to celebrate D'Movie's arrival on DVD, here, without further ado, are the 10 best movies about men dressing up as women...

Mrs Brown's Boys, the stupendously successful sitcom, transferred to the big screen earlier this year for Mrs Brown's Boy D'Movie. The film comes to DVD on Monday (October 27th) and sees Mrs Brown battling to keep her fruit and veg stall out of the hands of some unpleasant property developers. In her words, they can all "feck off"...

As you will all know, Mrs Brown herself is played by Brendan O'Carroll, and follows in the perculiar, British tradition of a man pulling on an ill-fitting dress and a dodgy wig in the service of comedy. Cinema has a rich histroy of men and women dressing up as the opposite sex. Whether it's to fool someone, or just for laughs, there's numerous examples of it throughout cinema's history. So to celebrate D'Movie's arrival on DVD, here, without further ado, are the 10 best movies about men dressing up as women...

10. Hairspray

John Travolta transforms into a woman for this musical remake as he dons a 30 pound fat suit and heels to play Edna Turnblad. Set in the 1960’s the film also stars Queen Latifah, Nikki Blonsky and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Travolta’s previously in tight leather pants, then flared pants and now a skirt. And apart from looking like he had a lot of fun, that suit must have be darn heavy to wear all day.

9. Orlando

This is a mega-crossdressing role where the late Quentin Crisp played Queen Elizabeth I. Crisp admitted his role was a complete nightmare to play, solely due to the agony caused by the costume.

8. The Nutty Professor

Back in the day this man was incredibly funny, especially when he played in roles like this where the entire cast is Eddie Murphy. He also wears a fat suit to act as Professor Sherman Klump, desperate to lose weight, he creates a special chemical to make himself skinny, but comes across a whole depth of trouble whilst doing so. Murphy plays the entire Klump family (bar the little son) even the flatulating grandmother.

7. Breakfast On Pluto

Cillian Murphy convincingly plays Patrick “Kitten” Brayden in Breakfast On Pluto. This comedy-drama touches upon more serious social situation about a young man’s sexuality. Kitten comes of age and leaves her Irish hometown for the big capital, London. There Kitten attempts to look for her mother because her gender identity is beyond her small town’s understanding. Murphy’s performance as kitten was absolutely flawless.

6. Junior

Not only does Arnold Schwarzenegger dress up as a woman, his character also takes part in a fertility research project, alongside Danny Devito and Emma Thompson. Meaning Arnie “get to the chopper” fighting-machine wore a dress, wig and even sported a very realistic looking pregnant bump.

5. The Fifth Element

Chris Tucker, another funny man and hilariously remembered for his roles in the Rush Hour movies, you may forget he played Ruby Rhod in Luc Besson’s film The Fifth Element. His character is overtop, shrieky and designed with an eye-ball troubling wardrobe. His role is a bit like marmite; you’ll love it or hate it.

4. Dallas Buyers Club

Jared Leto won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Rayon in this Aids drama. This film came with a string of competition for Oscar nominations earlier this year. If you haven’t seen it, have you been living on planet Earth recently?

3. The Three Fugitives

Another 80’s classic sees Martin Short dress up in disguise as a woman in this heartfelt comedy while his character, Ned Perry, attempts to steal money from a bank in order to keep his daughter, Meg. Perry holds Nick Nolte’s character, Daniel Lucas, hostage in the heist. Unknown to Perry, Lucas is in fact recently released from prison for 14 armed robberies himself. Yes, it’s an interesting one. Plus Kurt Russell is married to Goldie Horn and she’s a legend, so there’s double points for amazing in this one.

2. Tango and Cash

This is what we like to call a classic. Starring original 80s legends Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell and Teri Hatcher. More importantly, we get to see the typical tough guy (Russell) dressed in drag. And a very convincing one at that.

1. Mrs Doubtfire

The late-Robin Williams played in this legendary American-comedy where he dressed up as nanny in order to spend more time with his children.
